AI Policy
Last updated 21 September 2026
As a coaching practice, we are all members of the ICF and hold ourselves to their ethical standards. The ICF has done some work to apply those ethical standards to the use of AI in coaching. We have adapted this work to make our own policy. We anticipate this policy will evolve alongside the changing uses and capabilities of AI.
Use of AI in Coaching
As coaches, we may use ai to:
Prepare sessions and research coaching topics
Create frameworks and learning materials
Generate ideas for coaching exercises
Support administrative tasks
Support professional development
We avoid using ai to:
Generate unedited AI content for client or colleague communications
Process or share personally identifiable, confidential or sensitive client information
Diagnose, assess or confirm medical or mental health conditions
Replace professional judgement in coaching decisions
Use AI generated content with clients without disclosure
Communicate with clients using AI without their knowledge or consent
Protecting Clients
We never input personally identifiable, confidential or sensitive client information into AI tools.
Where client scenarios are used to generate ideas or resources, they must be fully anonymised and generalised so that the client cannot reasonably be identified.
We maintain the same confidentiality standards when using AI as we would in any other professional setting.
We are transparent with clients about when and how AI may be used in their coaching.
We always prioritise our clients’ needs, preferences and wellbeing over the convenience of AI tools.
Human Oversight
AI is a support tool and does not replace the coach’s professional judgement, responsibility or accountability.
We review AI generated information and content before using it in coaching, educational materials or client resources.
We remain responsible for ensuring that anything provided to clients is accurate, appropriate and consistent with our professional standards.
